How to Memorise Formulas So They Stay Memorised

Formulas are not memorised by staring at them. They are memorised by being used, spaced and connected. If you have ever known a formula perfectly the night before and lost it the moment the paper landed on your desk, the problem was never your memory — it was the method.

Almost every student I have taught starts the same way. They copy the formula onto a card, read it ten times, and assume that if they see it enough, it will stick. Then the exam comes, the mind goes blank, and they conclude they are "bad at remembering." They are not. They just used a method that memory does not respond to. Real, lasting recall comes from a handful of habits that anyone can build, no special talent required. Let us go through them properly.

Understand before you store

A formula you understand is roughly ten times easier to keep than one you have only copied. Before you try to memorise anything, slow down and ask three questions. What does each symbol actually stand for? Why does it sit where it sits — on top, on the bottom, squared, halved? And what would happen to the answer if one quantity grew or shrank?

Take the area of a circle, πr². You do not have to accept it as a magic string of symbols. The r is squared because area is a two-dimensional thing — double the radius and you do not double the area, you quadruple it. Once you feel that, the square is no longer something to remember; it is something that could not be any other way. That feeling — "this could not be otherwise" — is the strongest glue memory has.

Even a rough, hand-wavy intuition beats none at all. "Speed is distance divided by time, because the more ground you cover in the same time, the faster you are going" is not a rigorous derivation, but it gives your memory a hook that raw symbols never provide. The one-page chapter sheet

And the pay-off arrives in revision week. When exams are three days away and panic is rising, you do not open the six-hundred-page textbook. You open your fifteen one-page sheets. Students who build these sheets through the year revise in a fraction of the time everyone else spends, and they revise calmer, because they are looking at something familiar instead of a wall of print.

Use the formula — do not recite it

This is where most revision quietly fails. Reciting a formula — reading it aloud, covering it, saying it again — feels like studying, but it builds a very shallow kind of memory. It gets you through the next five minutes and rarely much further. What actually cements a formula is using it inside a real problem.

Every time you apply a formula to solve something, you are not just recalling the symbols; you are recalling when to reach for them, which is the part exams actually test. Three genuine problems per formula, spread across three separate days, will beat thirty minutes of chanting every single time. The spacing matters as much as the practice — a formula you use on Monday, Thursday and the following Tuesday is buried far deeper than one you drilled for an hour in a single sitting.

  • The derive-once rule: if you can rebuild a formula in twenty seconds — as with most trigonometric identities, or the quadratic formula from completing the square — then do not memorise the result at all. Memorise the short path to it. A formula you can regenerate on demand can never truly be forgotten, and it survives exam stress far better than a string you are holding by force.
  • Pair the confusables: permutations versus combinations, simple versus compound interest, mean versus median. Do not learn these apart and hope to tell them apart later. Learn them side by side, on the same line, each with one contrasting example, so the difference is the thing you remember rather than an afterthought.

Spacing: the quiet superpower

If there is one idea in this whole piece worth tattooing on your revision timetable, it is spaced repetition. Memory fades on a predictable curve, and the way to defeat the curve is to revisit material just as it begins to slip. Review a set of formulas today, again in two days, again in a week, again before the exam, and each pass takes less time than the last while the memory grows stronger.

Cramming does the opposite. Six hours the night before feels productive and traps everything in short-term memory, which is precisely the memory that collapses under pressure. Twenty minutes a day for two weeks costs less total time and produces recall that actually holds. The student who spaces their revision is not working harder than the crammer — very often they are working less — they are simply working with how the brain stores information instead of against it.

The night-before protocol

The evening before the exam is not the time to learn anything new; it is the time to confirm what is already there. Take your chapter sheets and run a simple loop. Read a sheet, cover it, and rewrite every formula on it from memory onto blank paper. Then uncover and check. Whatever you missed, rewrite twice, slowly.

This active recall — pulling the formula out of your own head rather than reading it off the page — is worth more than an hour of passive review, because it rehearses the exact thing you will do tomorrow. It also tells you the truth about what you actually know, which quiet re-reading never does. You will find that the sheet you built months ago does almost all the work for you now.

Then, and this is not a throwaway line, go to sleep. Sleep is when the day's rehearsal is consolidated into long-term memory; a tired brain in the exam hall forgets things a rested one would have held with ease. The all-nighter is the single most self-defeating exam habit there is. Trust the sheets, trust the spacing, and trust your rested mind.

Putting it together

None of this is complicated, and none of it asks for a gifted memory. Understand the formula before you store it. Build one page per chapter, by hand.
